Living Safely With Our Black Bear Neighbors --Chinquapin’s location in the heart of Western North Carolina means we live in one of the most beautiful—and wild—parts of the state. Black bears are a natural and long‑standing part of this landscape. As spring and summer arrive, sightings become more common, and it’s important for all of us to remember that we share this mountain community with them.
Bears generally avoid people, but they are intelligent, curious, and highly motivated by food. The best way to keep both residents and wildlife safe is to make sure we never give them a reason to approach our homes.
Please keep these important guidelines in mind:
Never feed bears—intentionally or unintentionally. Feeding wildlife is dangerous for both humans and animals.
Do not leave food, coolers, pet bowls, or garbage outside unattended. Even a small amount of food scent can attract a bear from a long distance.
Remember that putting bird seed out in feeders is like creating a McDonald's Drive-Thru for bears. They are attracted to spilled seed, will climb to find the source, and they are relentless in their quest.
Always latch the neighborhood dumpsters securely. An unlatched lid is an open invitation.
Keep vehicle doors locked at all times. Bears are surprisingly clever and have learned how to open car doors.
Store trash indoors.
Clean grills after each use and store them securely.
By staying vigilant and removing attractants, we help ensure that bears remain wild and safe—and that our neighborhood stays peaceful and protected. Thank you for doing your part to keep Chinquapin a place where people and wildlife can coexist respectfully.
Updates from General Manager Katie Nicholson -- In case you missed it, here are some highlights from the March 28 email sent by Katie:
MAJOR CHANGES FOR GATE CODES, SECURITY: The Board has approved a major upgrade to our community’s security and access systems. This investment will modernize our infrastructure and enhance both safety and convenience for all residents. Click here to read more about the changes.
AT THE OUTPOST: We are making several improvements, including decluttering, deep cleaning, and rearranging furniture. Damaged chairs have been removed, and I am working with the HOA Board to finalize a plan for replacing furniture ahead of the season. Door access is also being updated, and we will communicate any new procedures once finalized. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we prepare the facility.
SEASONAL GROUNDS CREW SUPPORT: Work begins in earnest on March 30. As the landscape continues to green up, you will see noticeable improvements throughout the community over the coming months.
