Catching Up 6.22.2023

Enjoy more of Kim Knapp’s bird photos he took this spring. Two Eastern bluebirds and a pair of Tree Swallows

--A croquet course is set up between the Outpost & the playground. Dave Barnett organized permission & setting it up with the help of Chinquapin neighbors.

--Trail Committee Meeting notes from the June 10 meeting are posted under the Maps & Trails tab. Dave Barnett heads up the Trail Committee.

--Calendar Page—This is a new page added earlier in June. It’s a tab on the Home page. While not intended to be an exhaustive listing of events & dates in the area, it includes the summer Chinquapin events that the Waterfront Group schedules, & the public library & The Village Green information. Some July 4 celebration dates scheduled for July 1 & 2 are listed as is the Lake Glenville dam release schedule.

--Timber rattlesnakes are protected in North Carolina. NC Wildlife doesn’t want them to be killed and does want to know where folks see them, as it is keeping records of these snakes’ whereabouts. www.ncwildlife.org for information.

--Fish Shack has a bear proof trashcan that’s been there a number of years. It’s closer to the meadow area than to the Fish Shack. One of these photos shows it with the Wilderness Road/Green Trail in the background. A diagram is on the can’s lid to show people how to open the lid. Bears’ paws and claws curve in such a way they can’t manipulate the latch. By the way, there are 2 bear proof trashcans at the Ingles Shopping Center, on the sidewalk where the smaller businesses are.

--Bearwise.org has good information on living with bears and protecting humans, animals, and the bears.

--Directory updates or new information for the directory can be emailed to Martha Dobson meadobson@gmail.com or Val Talley vhtalley@gmail.com

--Generators—Now is the time to choose and order a generator if you were thinking of installing one at your Chinquapin home. In case of power outages, especially in cold weather, a generator can prevent pipes from freezing and breaking. See the winterizing information in Useful Articles, under the Owner Resources tab. The Services page lists generator resources.

--Duke Energy and Balsam West Internet contact info is listed in the Owner Resources tab. Keep it on hand for outage reporting and updates.
