Catching Up 5.25.2023

Neighbor Kim Knapp shared some of his Chinquapin bird photos for us to see here. This is a Blackburnian Warbler. Thank you, Kim, & more bird photos will appear on the site. All, enjoy the bear & trail committee info & links to the local area in this Catching Up.

--The Social Events calendar created by Waterfront Group employee Ashley Roberts, formerly McCarthy, was in the newsletter she emailed owners May 4. It's also on this site--look under News and Updates for the February Catching Up to see the calendar. Check your promotions and/or spam folders if you didn't get that newsletter or the Sign Up Genius RSVP emails for events. The first social event is May 27. Let Ashley know if you don't see those emails. aroberts@chinquapinnc.com

--Trail Committee Meeting June 10, 5 pm, at the Outpost. Dave Barnett says trail use and maintenance will be discussed. If you're interested in Chinquapin's trails, please come. You don't have to be on the trail committee to share your views. Dave also says bring a beverage if you like and hang out after the meeting for some social time. Dave's contact info is in the directory.

--New croquet course--Thanks to Dave Barnett, and Dean Goldgar for helping him, a croquet course near the Outpost and the playground is set up. Equipment is stored in the golf closet next to the outdoor restrooms. Please return the equipment there when you're finished. Dave says rules for golf croquet are online.

--A new Panthertown Valley page is under the Maps & Trails tab. Find photographs of and by Chinquapin folks and information about this special national forest next door to Chinquapin.

--The News and Updates tab has past blog posts and news there. If you know you saw information somewhere, but can't remember where, check past blogs.

--Look under Owner Resources for the private owner directory, Waterfront Group employee names and contact information, and Duke Energy and Balsam West outage reporting and alert notification information. Email Val Talley or Martha Dobson to join the directory or update your listing. vhtalley@gmail.com meadobson@gmail.com

--Are you planning your home? Architectural guidelines & HOA documents are under Owner Resources, too.

Thank you, Julio Hoenigsberg, for the Tulip Pond eagle photo.

--Lose your power? When everyone notifies Duke Energy of an outage, the company gets a more complete picture of the location and degree of the outage. Go to the website to learn about its reporting app & alert notifications.

--Be Bear Aware Protect the bears and yourself, your pets, and your garbage. A helpful website and 2 bear info pdfs are below. Birdfeeders of any sort attract bears--yes, they will climb anything to reach them. Garbage smells are attractive, whether in your garage, car, or construction dumpster. Take garbage to the secure dumpsters behind the fencing at the archery & batting cage area. Emphasize to your builder that employees can't put food trash in construction dumpsters (visit the Nature & Wildlife tab to view the April video of a bear in a dumpster). Remove food and food trash from vehicles; lock the doors. Bears can open doors or smash windows to get in them. Leash your dog; most parks and national forests require dogs to be leashed. Bears who get used to food sources that aren't natural to them run the risk of becoming food conditioned and contacting humans. If a bear comes in contact with a human, the bear gets euthanized; relocating it doesn't change its conditioned behavior. https://bearwise.org/
