More Chinquapin owners are returning for their warm weather stays or visits and getting outdoors. Plants are blooming here for all to enjoy—Enjoy what nature is providing for all of us. “Take only pictures, leave only footprints.” There’s an Owner Survey to complete, too. More info is below. If website notifications land in your spam, follow the whitelist directions on the home page. Read past articles under News & Updates; scroll to see the article after opening it.

Many bears are roaming Chinquapin, with and without cubs. Don’t leave trash or food or anything that smells unsecured. Clean grills. Remove birdfeeders, they eat what’s on the ground and think you’ve opened a bear buffet. Hummingbird feeders are totally irresistible.  If cubs are around, so is mom—don’t bother them. Leash dogs. If bears are hanging out on your property (NC Wildlife says don’t let them get comfortable and think it’s ok to be close to people), and if you can SAFELY do so, squirt them with water from a hose, yell, blow an air horn, or sound your exterior alarm siren if you have one. Remember, only if you can safely do so, because BEARS ARE FAST. A person can’t outrun a bear. And look at this Bearwise information about protecting your car and home interior. https://mailchi.mp/bearwise/lock-it-or-lose-it?e=702c07((b184   The above directions come from the BearWise program presented by NC Wildlife. We had an informative program last fall. Photo of bear cutting through the a Double Knob yard.

Survey for Owners—there’s a new survey to update information collected from the past 2 surveys. Prior results are on the Owner Resource page of the website.

The survey link is accessible only on the owner website, under Owner Resources. Mouse over the May 2024 Owner Survey and click to open the survey. Each person who is an owner may complete the survey; each completion has to come from a unique email address, so it won’t work to fill it out using the same address for 2 completions. Complete the survey by midnight June 30. The results will be collated and posted for owners to see. Owners have the choice to complete the survey anonymously or to give their names. Allen Dobson, who created the survey, won't be able to see the email addresses of anonymously completed surveys.

Movie night—Tuesday, May 28, 5:30 at the Outpost. Ferrari 2023, Director Michael Mann, Starring Penelope Cruz & Adam Driver. Dinner is TBD. Let Allison Knapp or Fran Walker know if you’re coming—Text Allison 970-376-0157 or Fran 770-757-8454. Thank you Fran & Allison for organizing the second movie night.

Trail news—Come to Dave Barnett's trail committee meeting of volunteers Tuesday, May 28 at 4:30 at the Outpost, then stay for Movie Night. The Pink Trail’s signs have been refreshed and that trail’s map is updated on the Maps part of the website. Some Purple Trail work has been done to refresh that trail. Thank you, volunteers! Download trail maps where you have cell or internet service, before leaving on your hike. Each trail is marked with the correct colored blaze on trees.  Our plants are special and some are fragile. Don’t pick, don’t dig up, take pictures. Tell kids and visitors, too. Why??

Trillium takes 5-9 YEARS TO BLOOM!! Lady slippers take OVER A DECADE TO BLOOM!! Ants spread trillium seeds which can take from 5-9 years to bloom; lady slipper requires a certain fungus in the soil which triggers a symbiotic relationship. The fungus is required to break the seed open and provides the nutrients it needs.  The plant also requires bees to help pollinate. In older plants, the fungus will get nutrients from the plant’s roots. Transplanted lady slippers die—the right fungus isn't in the soil.

Dave also reminds us---Motorized vehicles are allowed on the Green Trail/Wilderness Road, the paved roads, and the golf cart paths. Refer to the March Hiking article under News & Updates. By conservancy rules, motorized vehicles

may not go on trails other than the ones listed above, including the Honeydew Trail, accessible from the Wilderness Road. Please inform your renters if you rent your property.

FedX Repeat Info—Please report incorrectly delivered packages so Alise at FedX will know if the problem is solved or not. Thanks for helping! If she hears nothing, she’ll assume all is well.

Over the past months, owners haven’t gotten packages delivered, as addressed, to their home in Chinquapin. Thank you to owner Wendy Renoux who recently investigated the situation and got helpful information. She began with filing a complaint, which is a first step for others if your package is not delivered properly. Wendy shared her info on the owners WhatsApp group & the owner Facebook group maintained by Bob Schatz. Here is Wendy’s info again. Deliveries: Bryson City office is in charge of our area-828-488-7359. Wendy spoke with Alise at that number. Alise has a gate code on file the drivers are supposed to use. Alise now has Ashley Roberts’ contact info to verify it. Alise understands packages aren’t delivered properly and will explain to the manager of the drivers to deliver as addressed. Contact Alise rather than Ashley at the Sales Office/Trading Post if there’s a delivery problem. File complaints also, to have that record activated.

Restaurants--The May 2024 blog post lists area restaurants, their addresses and phone numbers. Find it under News & Updates.

Calendar page on this website--Pickleball group info thanks to owner Diane Thomas,  Chinquapin social event dates organized by the Waterfront Group, The Village Green music events, the Glenville dam water release, and a few more things. There are OODLES of area activities and it’s impossible to get all of them on our Calendar page, BUT if you’re a member of the Cashiers Community Together Facebook group, it has a pinned calendar of just about every event and it announces events in posts on that page.

Private owner directory—it’s under Owner Resources. If you’re not in it and want to be, contact Val Talley or Martha Dobson.
