Catching Up 4.15.2023

Spring is springing! Ferns, flowers, trees, animals are showing up and coming out. And, fingers crossed, NCDOT will repair/pave Breedlove Road soon.

--The directory has some new owners added to it. Find it under Owner Resources. If you’re an owner not yet listed in the directory, and you want to connect with other owners, email Val Talley or Martha Dobson for details. If your directory information has changed, email the updates to Val or Martha, too. vhtalley@gmail.com meadobson@gmail.com

--Trail Committee—This committee plans to meet late May or early June. The committee will discuss, along with other items, the UTV trail comments recently made on the CHOA WhatsApp thread. These comments addressed adding more UTV trails, asked what trails are labeled for UTV use, and balancing UTV sound and nature’s sounds. For meeting info or if you have thoughts or ideas about any trail-related items, pass them on to Dave Barnett daveofgeorgia@gmail.com. Dave says he will be out of communication the next 2.5 weeks. Don’t worry if you don’t get a reply during that time.

--UTV versus ATV—Chinquapin allows UTVs rather than ATVs. A UTV (Utility Task Vehicle) is also known as a side by side and carries 2-4 passengers. There are gas and electric versions. An ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) is also known as a "quad" or a "4-wheeler" and is designed for 1 person to ride it. ATVs are "rider active", unlike side by sides, meaning that the rider can use his/her weight and other techniques to affect its handling.

--Chinquapin Trails Use—The current trails’ use--hiking, horseback riding, or motorized vehicle--has been in place for quite a while as determined by past developers. There’s a Maps and Trails tab on this website which shows the accurate, exact route of the trails. The UTV trails are the roads (several roads were originally trails), golf cart paths, the Green Trail which is also the Wilderness Road, and the Gray Trail road which goes down to the Charlie and Julie Falls parking. Some trails have signage indicating their permitted use. Watch where you’re putting your feet for critters while hiking!

--Pink Trail—If hiking this one in warmer weather, and enjoying its 3 scenic views, look out for snakes. They very much enjoy the rocks to sun on. The timber rattlesnake is labeled a Special Concern species by the NC Wildlife Resources and Commission and should not be killed. In fact, the NC Wildlife Resources and Commission wants people to report where they sight these snakes.

--Summer parties by the Waterfront Group--Look back to the February Catching Up on this site for the summer parties list created by the Waterfront employees in the Trading Post. For details, contact those folks.

--Power out? Internet being intermittent? The Owner Resources tab on this site has what you need-- the contact and reporting outage info for Duke Energy and for Balsam West, the internet provider. Go to Owner Resources and a list appears. Click on Owner Contacts & Directory. Those are good numbers to store in your phone or put on your fridge at home and your Chinquapin home for easy access. Any time the power is out, report it to Duke Energy so it gets a more complete picture of the power outage area. Duke has a notification system you can sign up for to get alerts about outages.

--For gate and other neighborhood issues/questions, use the email addresses and the phone numbers under the Owner Resource tab (click on Owner Contacts & Directory) to contact Ashley McCarthy, Mark Adkins, and other employees. Note: the cqadmin@waterfrontgrp.com email address reaches all the Waterfront Group employees simultaneously.

--Services—Send services or businesses that you recommend to Val or Martha to add to the Services page that’s on this website. If you are looking for a service, see if that page can help you out.
